ORIGIN

Golden Retrievers originated in Scotland and England, and were thought to be a mix of the Flat-Coated Retriever and the extinct Tweed-Water Spaniel. They were known as the Golden Flat-Coat for years, and were first brought to North America in the 1920's. Their looks and kind temperament made them very popular here. They were used as hunting dogs because of their keen sense of smell, and they were able to retrieve game birds from land and water without damaging them.
