Interview with Jackson Goldens!
Q: When did you start breeding dogs?
A: I started in dogs 34 years ago. When I got married, my husband bought me a Shetland Sheepdog, and 25 years ago, a friend of mine was moving to Alberta and couldn’t take her dog, so she asked if I would be interested in taking her. We bred Whitney a few times, and kept a few of her puppies.
Q: What do you think the best thing about Goldens is?
A: The best thing about Goldens are they are pleasers. They live to make you happy. The fact that they are pretty sure helps as well!
Q: How many puppies are usually in the litters?
A: There are anywhere from 1-12 in a litter, with the average being 6-8.

Q: How many dogs do you have right now?
A: At present I have 8 Goldens, and one 17 year old Chinese Crested Dog.
Q: How difficult is it to train a Golden?
A: Golden Retrievers are very trainable, if bred properly.
Q: How many years have you had some of your Retrievers in dog shows?
A: I have been showing dogs for 34 years. We have produced top dogs in 4 different countries. Many "Best in Show" dogs, and many "High in Trial" dogs.. Our present winning dog is Twinkle. She is the number 3 golden dog in Canada, number 1 golden puppy, and number 1 owner handled.
Q: Why did you choose Golden Retrievers?
A: I love how sweet, kind, gentle, and very trainable the breed was, and soon fell in love with the breed. I gave away the Sheltie, and began breeding Goldens under the Jackson Goldens name.

Q: How high is the demand for Golden Retrievers?
A: Sadly, they are very much in demand so this makes it very difficult on the breed as there are so many people breeding dogs just to make money. Those who show, do clearances, and breed for the pedigree do not profit from breeding. I always have a list about a year long in advance!
Q: Is it a lot of work to keep your Goldens groomed?
A: Goldens are a long-coated breed so they do shed. I bathe my dogs once a week to keep their coats in perfect condition.

Q: What's your favourite thing about your job?
A: My favourite thing about breeding dogs is making so many new puppy owners happy. It is hard work, but I love showing my dogs and to continue doing this I must produce dogs to show. Breeding dogs is a roller coaster ride. Many ups & downs. Not for the faint of heart, as it can be heartbreaking at times.
